Local History

Today, it was somewhat sunny-but-cold, then cloudy and rainy. I had two viewings for my flat (for the single room). The first was a virtual viewing, as the person is currently living in Sheffield (over 4-hours from Brighton). I showed all the rooms as best I could, including the balcony. Not sure how well I’d be able to judge a home with just a phone camera, but this was the best option in the circumstances. We talked about what we were both looking for in a lodger/room. She mentioned a friend possibly staying over, and also maybe her parents. I was left with the impression that my home may not be quite what she’s looking for.  The second viewing was a standard, in-person viewing. Ms R turned up at 4pm on the dot. I showed her around the flat. Then we sat down at the kitchen table and talked about our general backgrounds and lodger/room details. She is a local, works at a local school, and also does event hosting on the side. According to her Spare Room ad, she is seeking a room in a “non party household”. Well, I certainly tick that box. Turns out, she also has an adult daughter (though hers lives a little further away than mine, in Spain). Ms R was very easy to talk to, and we giggled and laughed at similar things. I can safely say that at this point, she would be my ideal lodger.

That Interview

The major news outlets have reacted similarly to Harry’s BBC interview, (in response to the Court of Appeal ruling). Certainly, not the best move to discuss family relations on a TV interview. And the most likely reason why no one in the family will speak to Harry is probably because no one wants their conversation to appear on a TV show or book. Still, I feel the tabloids and the media treat Harry and his family unfairly (with prejudice). I am reading Harry's 2023 book, Spare, and won't form any solid opinions before I finish it. However, what I will say is, Harry is a husband and father, and as far as appearances go, he is trying to do right by his family. To me, that will always be admirable regardless of anything else.

Serenity

I never used to notice the crowds or the noise, but these days, I seem to notice them all the time. Has the city changed, or have I? There have always been annual fringe festivals, marches, and various parades. Yet, I either did not notice, or did not care. These days, it can feel overwhelming. I even time my supermarket visits for quieter times. I first noticed this change in myself when my daughter went off to university. And my appreciation for serenity continued even after she moved back in. Interestingly, this also coincided with a more selective stance on TV/entertainment consumption, and earlier nights. However, to be perfectly honest, I am not a million miles away from my former self, just a more refined version.

Bananas

I bought a bunch of bananas last week, intending to have one everyday. For me, it is the easiest and simplest fruit to consume. No prep or utensils required. Just peel the skin, and bite into it. When finished, just put the skin in the rubbish bin. Great on the go or in the office. The same cannot be said for apples. First, you either need to chop them with a knife, which means prep, utensils etc. Or eat them whole, which means having to wash fingers afterwards. Besides, chopped apples need to be consumed straight away or they go brown. Definitely not ideal on the go or in the office. Back to the bananas in my kitchen. Yes, they are convenient, but they also need to be consumed within a few days of purchase, or the skin turns dark very quickly (it baffles me how we never see brown-skin bananas in the supermarket). Tip: do not buy too many bananas in one go.
